Looking for reasons to get outside? Well look no further than Microadventures by Alastair Humphreys. Filled with 38 unique, inspirational and, above all, manageable “microadventures“, Alastair Humphrey’s removes the usual boundaries stopping people from enjoying the great outdoors.
Alastair Humphreys attempts to break the stereotype that adventure is both expensive and time consuming, by creating micro-adventures that are locally based, require little to no equipment and can mostly be completed over the course of a weekend. By using what you have and by sleeping under the stars, Alastair Humphrey’s proves you can find worthwhile adventure within the UK all for the cost of a train fare.
With adventures that include hiking, cycling, kayaking, climbing and others, there really is something for everyone, whatever you are into or whatever you would like to try. Moreover each microadventure comes complete with photos and possible alternatives of how to make the adventure fit your abilities/location/interests, allowing you to tailor each micro-adventure to your wants and needs.
Towards the end of Microadventures, Alastair Humphreys has shared his wealth of knowledge regarding the outdoors in handy to access tip pages. Each section tackles a fear/apprehension you might have regarding the great outdoors i.e. sleeping outside and creepy crawlies, or teaches you the fundamentals of a new skill i.e. fire making, navigation and astronomy. These reference pages help you make the most out of your microadventure.
Microadventures by Alastair Humphreys has motivated me to spend more time outdoors and, in an attempt to help motivate others to get outside, I will be doing all of the suggested microadventures. By sharing my experiences online I hope to help promote the message that adventure doesn’t need to be expensive or distant and that worthwhile adventure can be found locally. As such, I will be staying in Devon as much as possible to showcase what the county has to offer. If you would like to stay up-to-date with these microadventures, follow the blog or follow me on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.
